FOR ME AN ADVENTURE IS SOMETHING THAT I CAN TAKE AN ACTIVE PART IN BUT THAT I DON’T HAVE TOTAL CONTROL OVER.

-PETER CROFT

Rock cairns (large conical rock piles) may also be used to mark trails, often above the timberline where trees and shrubs do not grow.

Trail junctions are usually signed and can be used to confirm that you are hiking your intended trail. Trail junction signs usually have a “You Are Here” indication, mileage, and arrows pointing to the continuation of the trail.

Trails that climb hills are often built using switchbacks, where the tread is angled up a hill to the right before turning hard left to climb the next part. Hikers need to pay close attention on a zigzag hill trail. Do not “cut” switchbacks.

Redundancy is never wasted. Take a map (or two) with you. Have a GPS or a phone with a trail app and GPS.
